The Right Turf for How You Use It

Not every yard needs to be 100% xeriscape. Kids need a place to run. Dogs need a place to play. Homeowners want a clean, green surface for entertaining, lounging, and barefoot mornings with coffee. The question is not whether to have turf — it is which type of turf makes sense for each zone of your property and how to install it so it actually performs in Austin’s climate.

Red Agave installs both natural sod and high-quality artificial turf. For natural grass, we work primarily with Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine varieties selected for Austin’s heat, sun exposure, and water restrictions. Every sod installation starts with soil preparation — not just rolling out grass on top of whatever is there. We amend the soil, grade for drainage, and install irrigation zones so the turf establishes properly and survives its first summer without burning out.

For areas where natural grass struggles — heavy shade, dog runs, side yards with poor drainage, or zones where you simply want zero maintenance — artificial turf is the smarter choice. We install premium synthetic turf on a properly engineered base with drainage fabric, compacted decomposed granite, and infill that keeps the surface cool and realistic. We also build steel-edged borders that give artificial turf a clean, permanent edge instead of the plastic strips that other installers use. What We Install

01
Bermuda Sod
Full-sun, high-traffic grass that thrives in Austin's heat. Dense, durable, and drought-tolerant once established. Ideal for backyards, play areas, and open lawns with 6+ hours of direct sun.
02
Zoysia Sod
Dense, carpet-like grass with moderate shade tolerance. Slower growing means less mowing. Excellent feel underfoot. Good for front yards and manicured lawn areas with 4+ hours of sun.
03
St. Augustine Sod
Austin's most common lawn grass. Good shade tolerance, thick coverage, and lush green appearance. Requires more water than Bermuda but handles partial shade that other warm-season grasses can't.
04
Artificial Turf
Premium synthetic turf for zero-maintenance lawns, dog runs, side yards, and play areas. Engineered drainage base, cool-touch infill, and steel-edged borders for a permanent, clean installation.
05
Putting Greens
Custom artificial putting greens with true ball roll, contoured surfaces, and fringe turf. Installed on compacted, laser-graded base for consistent performance. Any shape or size.
06
Pet Turf
Antimicrobial artificial turf designed for dog runs and pet areas. Rapid-drain backing, easy-rinse surface, and odor-resistant infill. Eliminates mud, dead spots, and digging damage.
Common Questions

Turf FAQ

How much does turf installation cost in Austin?
Natural sod installation (including soil preparation, grading, and irrigation adjustments) runs $2 to $4 per square foot depending on grass variety and site conditions. Artificial turf installation runs $8 to $15 per square foot including excavation, base preparation, drainage fabric, compacted base material, turf, infill, and steel edging. Putting greens are at the higher end due to laser grading and specialty turf. We provide exact pricing after a site visit.
Which grass type is best for Austin?
It depends on your sun exposure, water budget, and traffic. Bermuda is the most heat- and drought-tolerant and handles heavy foot traffic, but it needs full sun (6+ hours) and goes dormant in winter. Zoysia is dense and low-maintenance with moderate shade tolerance. St. Augustine handles partial shade better than either but needs more water. We often use different varieties in different zones of the same property to match each area’s conditions.
Does artificial turf get hot in Austin summers?
Synthetic turf does absorb heat and can reach surface temperatures of 140–160°F in direct afternoon sun during peak summer. We mitigate this with cool-touch infill products that reduce surface temperature by 15–20°F compared to standard infill. Strategic shade from trees or structures also helps significantly. For areas that get heavy afternoon sun and barefoot traffic, we’ll discuss whether artificial or natural turf is the better choice for that specific zone.
When is the best time to lay sod in Austin?
Spring (March through May) and early fall (September through October) are ideal for sod installation in Austin. These windows give grass time to establish roots before summer heat stress or winter dormancy. We can install sod year-round, but summer installations require aggressive watering schedules during establishment, and winter installations of warm-season grasses will remain dormant until spring green-up.
