Plastic is the most popular edging material nationally because it is cheap and easy to install. But in Austin, plastic edging fails faster than almost anywhere because of three factors: UV degradation from intense sun exposure, heat expansion that causes buckling, and clay soil movement that pushes stakes out. Gauge (Thickness)
The lower the gauge number, the thicker the steel:
- 16-gauge: Thin, lightweight, easy to bend by hand. Fine for gentle curves and DIY projects, but bends easily on impact. Not recommended for Austin clay

Finish
- Galvanized: Zinc coating prevents rust. Silver appearance that blends into the landscape over time. Most affordable protective finish
- Powder-coated black: Clean, modern look. The coating adds UV and scratch resistance. Hides the edging in dark mulch beds. Popular in contemporary designs
- Corten (weathering steel): Develops a warm rust-brown patina over 6 to 12 months that stops further corrosion. The patina color complements Austin’s limestone, native plantings, and earth tones. Premium option
