Drainage Test: Dig a hole 12 inches deep and 12 inches wide. Fill with water and time how long it takes to drain. Drain in 1-2 hours = good. Drain in 6+ hours or doesn't drain = poor drainage, amendment needed.

Texture Test: Take a handful of moist soil. Squeeze it into a ball. If it stays in a tight clump and doesn't break apart easily, it's clay-heavy and will need organic amendment. If it crumbles easily, it's loamy and has decent structure.

pH Test: Buy a soil test kit from any garden center (under $10). Follow package directions. Most Austin soils read 7.5-8.5. Document this for plant selection.
