1. Uplighting (the workhorse)

Fixtures sit at ground level and aim upward to illuminate trees, architectural features, columns, walls, and focal points. 2. Downlighting

Color Temperature: Choosing the Right Warmth

Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) and determines how warm or cool the light appears. This is the most critical decision in your lighting system after fixture placement.

The critical rule: Match every fixture and strip in the system to the same Kelvin temperature. Mixing 2700K uplights with 3000K FCOB strips creates a visible color mismatch that looks unintentional and distracting. Pick one temperature and commit.

Designing a Lighting Plan

Step 1: Walk the property at night

Before selecting a single fixture, walk your property after dark with a bright flashlight. Aim it up at trees from different angles, wash it across walls, point it down paths. This exercise reveals which features are most dramatic when lit and from what angle. Take notes or photos — what looks best when lit from the left may look flat when lit from the right.

Step 2: Identify the priority features

Not everything needs lighting. Prioritize:

  1. Trees — the most impactful single element to light. Mature live oaks, pecans, and cedars are stunning when uplighted

Wiring and Technical Fundamentals

Low voltage vs. line voltage

Residential landscape lighting runs on low voltage — 12V or 24V DC — stepped down from your home’s 120V AC by a transformer. Low voltage is safer (no electrocution risk from buried wire), does not require an electrician for the landscape portion, and allows flexible fixture placement. The only line-voltage component is the outlet the transformer plugs into, which does require a licensed electrician if one does not exist.

Transformer sizing

The transformer is the power supply for the entire system. Size it using the 80% rule: total fixture wattage should not exceed 80% of the transformer’s rated capacity.

Wire gauge and voltage drop

Voltage drop is the enemy of landscape lighting. As current travels through wire, it loses energy to resistance — the longer the run and the thinner the wire, the more voltage drops. Fixtures at the end of a long, thin wire run will be noticeably dimmer than fixtures near the transformer.

Wiring layouts

Connections

Every connection point is a potential failure. Use waterproof, gel-filled wire connectors rated for direct burial. Never use standard wire nuts wrapped in electrical tape underground — moisture will corrode the connection within 1–2 seasons, causing flickering, dimming, and intermittent failure. Most landscape lighting service calls trace back to corroded connections, not failed fixtures.
