What Is Decomposed Granite?

Decomposed granite (DG) is a granular material created by the natural weathering of granite rock. It breaks down into a mix of small stone fragments, coarse sand, and fine powder, typically screened to 1/4 inch and smaller. The combination of particle sizes is what gives DG its unique property: when moistened and compacted, the fines fill the gaps between larger particles and lock together into a firm, walkable surface — unlike pea gravel, which remains loose because all the particles are the same round shape.

Three Types of Decomposed Granite

Natural DG (loose)

Raw decomposed granite with no additives. It compacts to a moderately firm surface but remains somewhat loose on top, produces dust when dry, and migrates during rain or heavy foot traffic. Natural DG is the most affordable option and works well as planting bed ground cover, mulch replacement in xeriscape beds, and fill material between stepping stones or flagstone joints.

Stabilized DG (with binder)

Decomposed granite pre-mixed with a binding agent — typically a natural resin or polymer at 10 to 15 pounds per ton of aggregate. When moistened and compacted, stabilized DG cures into a firm, cohesive surface that resists erosion, reduces dust by 80 to 90 percent, and holds its shape significantly better than natural DG. Stabilized DG is the right choice for walkways, patios, and any surface that receives regular foot traffic.

DG with resin coating

The premium option. A liquid resin is applied over compacted DG to create a hard, sealed surface similar to asphalt in firmness. This produces the most durable surface but sacrifices some permeability and costs significantly more. Best for high-traffic commercial applications, ADA-compliant paths, and areas where maximum dust control is required.

Where to Use DG in Your Landscape

Walkways and paths

The most common DG application. A compacted DG path provides a natural, informal walking surface that complements garden and landscape settings. Use stabilized DG for primary walkways that get daily use, and natural DG for secondary garden paths with occasional traffic. DG paths feel more organic and relaxed than concrete or stone walkways — they suit naturalistic landscape designs where rigid hardscape would feel out of place.

Patios and gathering areas

DG works as an affordable patio surface for casual outdoor dining and seating areas. It drains well (no standing water), stays cooler underfoot than concrete or stone in Austin’s summer heat, and costs a fraction of paver or flagstone patios. The tradeoff: furniture legs can settle into the surface over time, and it is not as stable as stone for dining tables. Best suited for lounge areas, fire pit surrounds, and casual entertaining spaces.

Xeriscape and planting bed ground cover

DG is an excellent mulch alternative for water-wise and drought-tolerant planting beds. Unlike organic mulch, DG does not decompose, does not need annual replacement, does not harbor insects, and keeps plant crowns dry (reducing rot risk in agaves, yuccas, and succulents). Use 2 to 3 inches of natural DG around xeric plants and let it serve as both ground cover and weed suppression.

Flagstone and stepping stone joints

DG fills the gaps between flagstones and stepping stones, creating a natural, permeable joint that complements the stone. It compacts between stones to create a stable walking surface and allows water to drain through the joints rather than sheeting across the patio surface.

Dog runs and utility areas

Compacted DG creates a clean, drainable surface for dog runs and side-yard utility areas. It does not turn to mud like bare soil, does not harbor odors like organic mulch, and provides good footing for dogs. Use stabilized DG for dog runs to prevent the surface from being dug up.

Bottom line: DG is the best choice for walkable surfaces because it compacts into a stable plane. Pea gravel is better for decorative areas where you want maximum drainage and do not need to walk on it regularly. Crushed stone is best as a base material or for heavy-load areas like driveways.

How to Install Decomposed Granite

Step 1: Excavate

Remove existing turf, organic material, roots, and soft soil to a depth of 5 to 7 inches below the desired finished grade. This accommodates 2 to 4 inches of compacted base plus 3 to 4 inches of compacted DG. Shape the subgrade to the intended slope (minimum 1% grade for drainage — 1 inch of fall per 8 feet).

Step 2: Install edging

Set edge restraints before adding any base material. Steel landscape edging is the best choice for DG — it creates a clean, permanent line, handles curves, and will not rot or shift. Install edging so the top sits flush with or slightly above the finished DG surface. Stake edging securely into the compacted subgrade.

Step 3: Lay and compact the base

Spread 2 to 4 inches of crushed stone or road base (sometimes called flex base) over the subgrade. Moisten thoroughly and compact with a plate compactor in two passes. This base layer provides structural support and improves drainage beneath the DG surface. Skip this step on garden-path-only installations where traffic is light — primary walkways and patios always need a base.

Step 4: Install landscape fabric (optional)

Lay commercial-grade landscape fabric over the compacted base to prevent weed growth up through the DG. Use commercial woven fabric, not the thin stuff from box stores that degrades in one season. Overlap seams by 6 inches and secure with landscape staples. Some installers skip fabric and rely on the DG depth and compaction to suppress weeds — both approaches work, but fabric provides an extra barrier.

Step 5: Spread DG in lifts

This is the critical step most DIY installations get wrong. Do not dump all the DG at once and compact the top. Instead:

  1. Spread the first lift of DG at 1.5 to 2 inches deep
  2. Moisten with a fine spray until damp but not saturated
  3. Compact with a plate compactor in overlapping passes
  4. Spread the second lift at 1.5 to 2 inches deep
  5. Moisten and compact again
  6. Final grade with a landscape rake to a smooth, slightly crowned surface

The lift process ensures the entire depth is compacted uniformly. If you dump 4 inches at once and compact, only the top inch firms up — underneath is loose material that will settle, crack, and turn into a sandbox within months.
